Coal Washing

The initial design of the Goodwin submersible slurry pump came from working closely with British Coal, when the coal washing industry was still thriving in the UK.


They set a design brief to Goodwin with the task of eliminating the problems that they had with their existing submersible pumps to allow them to utilise Goodwin pumps in both the dense medium and baum jig processes, the five main problems that they experienced were eliminated by Goodwin addressing the following points:


  • Develop a motor enclosure which would eradicate the potential for the electric motor overheating & burning out.
  • Develop an electric motor with reserves of power for direct on line starting to overcome the issue of settled solids in sumps
  • Develop a design of an integral agitator to break down and re-suspend settled solids
  • Develop and position a mechanical seal which was not subjected to pumped media pressure
  • Develop a cable gland entry system which prevented the cable being pulled out of the gland and had a terminal enclosure quite separate from the motor enclosure

By addressing these points Goodwin overcame the traditional problems that used to be experienced with normal submersible slurry pumps to become the market leading pump for heavy duty applications where other pumps fail.


After British Coal saw the advantages of the Goodwin submersible slurry pump, they found many other uses for them replacing equipment such as drag lines, earth moving machinery, conveyor belt systems, dense media mixing tanks which before using the Goodwin submersible slurry pump they never would have considered using a submersible pump because of the industry wide poor reliability problems.

Goodwin submersible slurry pumps, are proven worldwide to succeed in the most demanding environments, like pumping Mill Scale at high temperatures


What makes our submersible slurry pump particularly suited to working in the Steel industry are the following features:


  • It has our own proprietary design of oil filled motor, which has proven itself in the industry for over 30 years. The motor is built to withstand pumping continuously based on all steel copper and brass construction (no aluminium), with a slurry temperature of 90°C carrying up to 65% solids by weight, handling particles up to 32mm diameter.
  • Where other submersible pumps will burn out if they are accidentally left and run dry, the Goodwin submersible slurry pump can run indefinitely pumping no media without burning out or tripping.
  • The patented Inducer on the Goodwin submersible slurry pump creates a hydraulic shock wave that puts very dense particles in to suspension to be pumped with ease.
  • The “wet-end” of the pump is made of highly abrasion resistant materials suited to working in the most demanding environments with the minimum of wear.
  • The twin volute design exerts a balanced force on the pump shaft, maximising the bearing and mechanical seal life. By minimising any vibration whether pumping no media / water / or a heavy slurry.
  • The mechanical seal is not subjected to pumped media pressure (just the depth of pump submergence - up to 28m) reducing the possibility of any failure.
  • The ‘open vane impeller’ and ‘wear plate’ combination give unsurpassed performance for dealing with heavy slurries giving up to 60m Head and a maximum pumping distance of 1000m
  • It easily achieves required running interval to be able to plan maintenance for scheduled shutdowns
  • As the ‘wet end’ is immersed in the product the Goodwin submersible slurry pump does not need priming.

Continuous Casting and Hot Rolling Mills

Our pumps can be installed in the scale pits underneath the Croppers, for both removing the Scale, and "Flume Flush" operation.


The Basic Oxygen Plant (B.O.S)

Goodwin submersible slurry pumps are regularly installed in the Basic Oxygen Plants (B.O.S) running in sumps below the precipitators, pumping high temperature limestone sludge back into the system for re-processing


Slag Granulation

Goodwin submersible slurry pumps pump high temperature granulated slag when water is used as the granulating medium. Our pumps can handle particle sizes up to 40mm (200 ANZE), handling all particles from micron sizes up to their maximum particle size. Our pumps are primarily utilised after the slag has been granulised, pumping slag granules from the quenching pond to the de watering systems. Goodwin submersible slurry pump are capable of pumping slag at a continuous rate at up to 65% solids by weight.

Conveyor Drive and Transfer Points

In Power Stations, Goodwin pumps are used in areas of general clean‑up and solids removal. The use of these submersibles has enabled the Power Stations to generate electricity continuously, keeping down the solids that accumulate due to spillage at the conveyor transfer points and around the drive drums of those conveyors.

The efficient and prompt removal of these solids eliminates the chances of fire due to solids build‑up around the drive and tension drums.


Paddle Hopper Feeds and Stock Pile Drains

By using wash down hoses in the vicinity of the paddle hopper feeder and stock pile drains, all the -30mm coal spillage can be pumped to the surface where it can be handled by the coal plant mobile machinery.

There have been dramatic improvements in the working conditions for the plant operators and availability of conveyors since the submersibles have been installed. By providing a reliable pump, the plant will be kept clean with the minimum of effort. It is fact that one gets more work from manual labour  by asking them to "wash‑down" with a hose, than if they were given shovels and wheel barrows to remove spillage and debris.


Boiler and Ash Plants

On boiler plants Goodwin Submersibles have replaced vertical spindle pumps, high pressure water ejectors and pneumatic ejector systems in "Ash Crusher Sumps". Located at each end of the boilers. The Goodwin submersibles are installed by the side of the crushers where there is always ash and water from the quench circuit present. The agitator on the Goodwin submersible pump is very effective here to ensure that all solids are removed. This enables quick access to the ash crushers when maintenance is required. Previously, much production time was lost when the crushers blocked or failed when the sumps had to be dug out to remove ash residue before maintenance could be effected.


Precipitator Drains and Dust Sumps

The Goodwin pump is equally effective when handling very fine dusts, for example, in the precipitator drains tank. Very high concentrations of dust particles are discharged from the precipitators; up to 60% solids is not uncommon. Turbine hall drainage is also diverted to these tanks to help with dilution. The product in these tanks is pumped just a short distance to the main ash pits.

Light duty clean water submersible pumps in these tanks do not perform well. The complaint from the fuel and ash engineer was that when this product is de-watered it sets as hard as concrete. Pneumatic picks were used 2 or 3 times a year when the solids had to be removed. Typically, sumps where Goodwin Submersible Pumps have been installed over 4 years ago have never required any solids to be removed manually. The influence of the agitator ensures maximum solids removal.

This sites emergency ash lagoon was full. After 10 days pumping with two Goodwin 100 ANZE pumps the difference is clearly visible. The lagoon is now run and maintained at its original depth which it has never been at since the power station was commissioned.


River Clean-up / Hydro Power

Goodwin submersible slurry pumps can often provide the perfect solution to assist with silt removal at River Water Intakes / Hydro Power generation plants.


Due to their nature rivers have variable flows depending on the amount rainfall in their catchment area. After a heavy rainfall the river flow will increase and it will hold a lot more sediment, after its peak flow following a rainfall the flow will decrease, the water velocity will be lowered and the suspended sediment settles out.


At Hydro Power stations and River Water Intakes the effect of sediment deposition is amplified as normally a river will be dammed to create the head of water required to generate the power / have a supply of water. As the river water enters the reservoir behind the dam its velocity decreases and the sediment it is holding is deposited.


Normally the silt removal process is very timely and expensive – and may involve dredging. When dredging is performed, all activity near the place of sediment removal is stopped – which maybe a Hydro Turbine or a Water Intake station.


By using a Goodwin submersible slurry pump in most instances it is not necessary to stop the process of generating power or taking water from the river, because all the sediment (that is turned into a slurry by the hydraulic shock-wave of the pumps agitator) is pumped away (normally to just downstream of the reservoir).


By doing this our customers have prolonged the life of their turbines, as by keeping lower levels of sediment, less enters the turbine wearing it away. In addition to this it allows them to keep the turbine on-line generating power when previously they would have to shut it down when the sediment is cleared.

Leaching

Due to the nature of many processes that are used in processing minerals and ore refining there are some extremely demanding applications found, which are ideal for the Goodwin Submersible Slurry Pump. Although our standard pump is made with a highly abrasion resistant “wet-end” and a ductile iron body for the pump, this is sometimes not suitable due to process conditions that are sometimes used in leaching.

By these “process conditions” we are referring to extremely Acidic or Alkali process media which would be totally unsuitable for the standard materials of construction. Our standard operating pH range is 4 – 10. If the  pH of the slurry to be pumped is outside the standard operating range we can offer a pump constructed of suitable materials that will be resistant to the chemical attack of the pump encompassing all parts in contact with the slurry.

High Temperature Digesters

Goodwin submersible slurry pumps are utilised for pumping the processed ore slurry normally at high temperatures up to 90°C and concentrations up to 2.8 Kg / litre from digester tanks.



Froth Flotation Plants

For maximum effectiveness of the froth cells, there is an absolute need for good homogeneous water / solids slurry mix to feed the cells. The Goodwin submersible is used because the agitator prevents solids settling in the tank and provides consistent product to the froth cells. With the use of a bypass line and pinch valves, the flow rates can be adjusted to the requirements of the froth cells. It has been proven that the froth cells operate more efficiently with the Goodwin submersible supplying the product rather than small horizontal stationary pump units.


Cyclone Plant Centrifuge Effluent

Centrifuge Effluent is a relatively clean product to pump, but with the Goodwin Submersible installed, it is possible to combine floor clean-up sumps with the centrifuge effluent sump, negating the need for additional pumping equipment and buffer tanks or sumps. The 25-30 m3/hr of centrifuge effluent can be diverted as extra dilution into the wash down sump with good effect.

Pumps with good particle handling capabilities are needed in this application, as centrifuge baskets do fail and product up to 12 mm in size is deposited in the sump with high solids concentration.


Tailings Filter Presses

Fast filling the filter press chambers is an ideal application for the Goodwin submersible pump. It has already shown higher productivity of the presses and a saving in operating costs. The feed product to the presses is the flocculated tailings from the thickener. Without further dilution, this product is pumped from the thickener buffer tank directly to the filter press. A pressure of 3.8 bar can be generated in the filter press with the Goodwin submersible pump. When the press chambers are full, a positive displacement pump takes over to generate the higher pressure of 8 bar at which the filter cake can be discharged at 30% moisture.

The press cycle time is reduced as the press is fast filled with a higher concentration product. The positive displacement pump will run only for a fraction the time it would when fast filling with conventional pumps, so extending its operational life.

Goodwin submersible pumps supply more concentrated product to the filters and the Goodwin submersible are many times more reliable than horizontal pumps in this application as it operates with more stability over a larger portion of the characteristic curve.


Filter Press Filtrate Sumps

When filter cloths become damaged a very heavy slurry is dropped into the sump. There is a requirement for a slurry pump to be installed at this location, and this sump can be combined with floor clean-up sumps to reduce the number and type of pumps on the plant ‑ as with centrifuge effluent.


Concentrators

With ore cleaning and concentration processes they are invariably wet processes that produce large amounts of waste material that is separated from the ore. Goodwin submersible slurry pumps handle both the concentrate and waste generated, minimising water consumed and maximising efficiency by pumping slurries with up to 65% by weight concentration (2.8 kg / Litre). Because of the heavy duty nature of the Goodwin submersible slurry pump it can handle clay / silica / grit and any abrasive material that is present because of its highly abrasion resistant ‘wet end’  - handling particles up to 40mm .

An increasingly common method of mining is “Hydro Mining”, which uses high pressure water jets, rather than excavators


Because of the high S.G. of the slurry produced, and the large particles that can be present with this type of mining, the Goodwin Submersible Slurry Pump is perfect for this type of application.


It is used to pump the slurry that is produced, directly to the customers washing plant without the need for expensive excavators and dumper trucks.


The application shown here uses the Goodwin 200mm ANZE® Submersible Slurry Pump. By using the Goodwin pump, rather than a domestically sourced pump, the production has increased by over 275%, and this one mine site is now delivering over 11 Tonnes of Nickel per day, at US$11,000 per Tonne.
