Goodwin recommends all its submersible slurry pumps are suspended on chains, with a Bauer type adapter for coupling to the pump followed by a length of reinforced flexible hose before connecting to any rigid pipe work (shown in the photo). This enables the pump to operate correctly when it is in thick heavy slurries, as when the pump is started and slurry has settled around it there is a very high energy start as the motor is ‘direct on line’ which makes the pump kick.

As the pump is suspended on chains, the ‘kick’ it breaks away from any settled slurry allowing standing water to get to the impeller by flowing around the pump body as it has broken away from the slurry. As soon as this has happened the pumps agitator starts emitting its hydraulic shock wave sphere of influence, putting dense particles into suspension to be pumped with ease.

Bend Radius: Flexible Construction to have a Minimum Bend Radius of 500mm

Standard Lengths: Hose Can be Supplied in Standard Lengths of 5m & 10m with a tolerance of ± 100mm

Standard Weight: 8.4kg per running meter plus flange connections.

Operating Temperature Range: Product Temperature of -20°C to + 82°C Operating Pressure: 7kg/cm2g

Verification Tests: Hydro test: 11kg/cm2g Vacuum Test: 625mm Hg Shore

Hardness: Tube: 50 Deg A (±5) Tube: 60 Deg A (±5)

It is recommended that a length of this hose is directly attached to the pump, to allow movement and operation as described at the top of the page. Following on from this it is normal to use a lighter weight more medium grade hose as it is more easily handled.

Medium Duty Hose

We can supply this in custom lengths of up to 50m. This is 100mm spiral wound reinforced hose that does not collapse or kink easily. This is the normal hose used for the transport of the slurry over any distance, done by connecting it directly to the Heavy duty discharge hose. This can be supplied with flanged ends, quick release couplings or as plain hose to suit your requirements.

Quick Release Couplings

The Bauer connectors can be set up in minutes while offering the flexibility of deflection at each joint up to 30°. They are robust yet user friendly connectors suitable for slurry applications. Couplings supplied will be hot dipped galvanised for corrosion resistance.

Pump Cable

The Goodwin 100mm pumps are supplied with 3 phase + earth very heavy duty armoured trailing cable for maximum protection against accidental damage. This is tried and tested cable that is fitted to the Goodwin pump, and we will NOT supply any other cable between the pump and electrical control panel, as it is an integrated part with the very secure cable gland arrangement. (Although we would never condone it and would take no responsibility for it, we have had customers retrieve our pumps by lifting them with the cable) Distances may vary from pump to panel from installation to installation – please specify length of cable to be supplied with pump when ordering. (Maximum cable length between pump and panel is 100m) .

Panel Stand

The Goodwin pump control panel comes as standards with mounting brackets allowing it to be easily affixed to a wall. Should the installation be where there is no-where where the panel can be bolted to we also make a self standing panel stand – allowing for flexibility where the pump is installed.

Panel Shelter

In most installations it will not be necessary to cover the pump control panel, but in installations where it could be exposed we make a cover that easily fixes onto the panel providing it with shelter if it is in a exposed location. Covers are regularly installed when the pump is mounted on panel stands, on pontoons due to the exposed location of the panel and in dirty areas, for example when a pump is installed underneath a transfer conveyor on a ‘clean up duty'.

Lifting Chains

Custom made lifting chains are recommended so the slurry pump is lifted from a single point. This means that the pump remains vertical at all times, and is not lifted on an angle, which can happen on site if only one of the lifting points is used. By keeping the pump vertical oil is kept in the correct areas to allow maximum lubrication and heat dissipation, maximizing bearing life and motor cooling. Additionally when starting the pump when it is submerged in settled slurry – it allows the pump to ‘kick’ as described in the hose accessories section.

For lifting our submersible slurry pumps we recommend that a hoist with a minimum rating of 1.5 tonnes is used, because from our experience up to 1.5 tonnes lifting force is can be required to break the pump free of the settled slurry, which is more than would be expected during normal operation as there is only the weight of the pump and pipe work to be considered.

The chain unit is supplied with two shackles to couple it directly to the Goodwin pump.

  • 1.5 Tonnes (standard working load)
  • Leg Lengths 600mm
  • Master Links to fit 5 Tonne Lift Hook

Chain Blocks
Chain block

We can source and supply chain lifting blocks for customers who want us to assist with their installations.

Prior to specifying a chain lifting block it is necessary to know the details of the installation:

a) Depth of Pit pump to be lowered into
b) Height Above Pit the block will be suspended from.

Knowing the following information, we will make sure that it is suitable for your installation, by making sure that it will allow the pump to reach the bottom depth required and that the chain loop for raising and lowering the pump only reaches to the ground level where the operator is standing – so there is not excess chain everywhere.

Pontoons

When pumping from a pontoon we have good experience with several designs – our favoured is a modular system of floating cubes which can be assembled together quickly allowing, allowing for easy installation and transportation if the pontoon is ever required to be moved.

The system comprises of 50 x 50 x 40cm cubes that interlock as shown in the picture below:

Pontoon assembly

The net result is that you can have a customizable work platform, that is easily created which can vary in size depending upon your application, for example it can be made to hold several pumps if the application requires it without the need for special one-off fabrication costs.

Hose Floats

Depending on your application you may want to add floats to your discharge hose.

We can supply discharge hose floats that can be affixed around the discharge hose, floating the hose and making it visible to highlighting its presence to other people.

As it is a submersible pump the shackles and chain unit come in a galvanized finish to minimize corrosion and maximize working life.

For lifting the slurry pump when it is in operation we recommend that a hoist with a rating of 1.5 tonnes is used. This is because when the pump is connected into a system the chain it is hanging on will also bear the weight of the pipe work and all the slurry it contains.

Additionally if the pump is positioned in a sump with settled slurry – from our experience 1.5 tonnes is usually sufficient to break the pump free of the settled slurry.
