Thick Mud

This was a customer demonstration where they had settled mud deposits that needed removing as a by product from their gold mining activity. In the demonstration the pump is shown working with heavy slurry. When the flow is massively reduced, the pumped slurry does not have the required water content (n.b. Goodwin submersible slurry pumps can handle up to 65% solids by weight). Even with this higher solids content, when the pump is raised, it allows more water to mix with the mud and create a 65% solids by weight slurry; clearing the pipe and resuming normal operation. Whilst watching this video you will also notice the effects of the external inducer of the Goodwin submersible slurry pump - which assists in the re-suspension of the settled solids, which is clearly seen by the mud cascading towards the submerged pump.

IRON ORE

When Iron Ore is excavated and processed due to its high density and highly abrasive nature when any comes out of the process for whatever reason it can be very difficult to re-introduce good product easily back into the production process. In this application video the plant uses a wet process and has lots of sumps that are full of product that currently they have been unsuccessfully being to put back into their process to reclaim and sell it. They have been using vertical spindle pumps unsuccessfully for many years until they trialled the Goodwin Submersible Slurry pump.

COOLING WATER

This was a customer demonstration at a power station, where a cooling water reservoir tank that was not supposed to have any contamination in had gradually filled up with ash over time. Prior to the purchase of a Goodwin submersible slurry pump they had to drain the tank and manually excavate the ash because every other pump they tried just took off the surface water and did not turn the ash into slurry and pump it. At the point of this demonstration they had removed nearly all the surface water as they did not believe our claim that our pump would handle it with ease, and were preparing to manually excavate the tank after the demonstration! Needless to say as soon as they saw the demonstration they bought the pump and did not let us leave the site with it. Now with the benefit of the Goodwin submersible slurry pump they are able keep the tanks online and pump out any contamination as the need arises. Below is a photo of a similar demonstration where ash was accumulating at the bottom of cooling towers - and to clean them out they had to take the cooling tower off-line. Now with the Goodwin submersible slurry pump they keep the cooling towers free of contamination without the need to take them off line, allowing them to produce more power, increasing their efficiency and profitability.

COAL SLURRY

This was a customer demonstration where they has settled fine coal dust deposit, that we could directly re-feed into their process allowing them to reclaim the material easily - the payback in this instance for the pump was less than 7 days, as they were able to reclaim more than 200 tonnes a week and turn it into saleable product.
In the demonstration the pump is shown working with a heavy slurry consisting of extremely fine particles which the customer had never been able to successfully pump before and as such they had to mechanically remove it. Exactly the same happens as in the Thick Mud video, when the flow is massively reduced, the pump slurry does not have the required water content (n.b. Goodwin submersible slurry pumps can handle up to 65% solids by weight) Even with the higher solids content - when the water re-enters the crater made by the pump it allows water to mix with the fines and create a slurry; clearing the pipe and reverting to normal operation. When the pump has consumed all the water from the surrounding area by pumping it as a slurry - the amount of solids removed can clearly be seen by the crater that has been created. In addition to this when the crater re-fills with water - the effect of the Goodwin slurry pump external inducer can clearly be seen by the agitation on the surface of the water. Our inducer assists in the re-suspension of settled solids; turning them into a pump-able slurry.

MILL SCALE

During hot steel rolling; continuous casting and flame / mechanical cutting of steel, mill scale and cutting debris is created. Because of the high temperatures involved in the processing of steel - the process water / cutting fluids can be very hot. The Goodwin submersible slurry pump can pump slurries up to 90°C in temperature thus overcoming this obstacle, allowing for scale / cutting debris to be easily transported from confined spaces under the plant to where they can be easily processed.

COAL WASHERY

On a coal washery there are many uses for a Goodwin submersible slurry pump - the problem we have is demonstrating them as the pumps are normally submerged and not visible. In the two applications shown the product was put into lagoons to settle out and was previously dug out before they installed Goodwin slurry submersible pumps. With the absence of water in the lagoons they are using fire hoses to jet settled product and take it to the pump; where the external inducer breaks down and re-suspends the large lumps of coagulated particles. The slurry created is then pumped back into the customers process, turning it into saleable product. For other typical applications please see our Industry page. BLAST FURNACE

During the production of Iron and Steel there are many uses for a Goodwin submersible slurry pump. In the short video there are a couple of visible applications - the problem we have demonstrating them all is because the pumps is normally fully submerged. In the first application the pump is on a "Clean Up" duty from the spillage of iron ore at a conveyor belt transfer point. The debris near to the pump demonstrates the rugged reliability of the pump. Also the effect of the external inducer can clearly be seen agitating the water helping to suspend the heavy iron ore particles so they can be pumped and fed back into the process. In the second application, the submersibles are pumping process water that is 2 kilometres away from the operating plant in a slag pit. Although this application looks like "clean water" they previously had failures due to excessive wear from debris prior to installing the Goodwin submersible slurry pump.

ASH PONDS

At this particular coal fired power station the emergency ash lagoon was always emptied manually by digging up the ash. They have installed two 100mm ANZE Goodwin submersible slurry pumps - and by doing this they have taken the lagoon down to its original depth (3m below the water level shown in this video). Previously they had never achieved this for the past 15 years since the power station was commissioned. The photo at the bottom of the Power section of the industrial applications shows this same pond after 10 days pumping.

DAMS & SEDIMENT

The video starts with a customer demonstration followed by an actual installation. The demonstration shows a Goodwin submersible slurry pump being lowered on a crane on top of accumulated sediment in front of a hydro-power station dam. By pumping away the sediment downstream they can maximise the depth of water below the hydro turbine water intake - minimising the amount of sediment passing through it, maximising its life. As the sediment that is churned up and turned into slurry by the Goodwin Slurry pumps external inducer, is actually pumped away - it can be done whilst the hydro turbine is online, unlike conventional dredging methods. Saving time and money for the hydro power station. The second clip shows a Goodwin submersible slurry pump being installed in front of a filter screen that is protecting two vertical turbine pumps, getting rid of any sediment before it accumulates. Similarly, as with the hydro power dam - the vertical turbine pumps used to be shut off and accumulated silt cleaned out manually prior to the installation of the Goodwin submersible slurry pump.

SUMP CLEANING

Many sites typically use "Vertical" slurry pumps in their sumps, as can be seen in this video. "Vertical" slurry pumps usually struggle to remove settled solids, which causes a reduction in the sump's capacity as these solids settle out over a period of time. This application shows the Goodwin submersible slurry pump removing the solids that the vertical pumps could not. In many cases, the customer will replace their vertical pumps with Goodwin pumps to prevent this reoccurring problem.

NICKEL MINING

An increasingly common method of mining is “Hydro Mining”, which uses high pressure water jets, rather than excavators


Because of the high S.G. of the slurry produced, and the large particles that can be present with this type of mining, the Goodwin Submersible Slurry Pump is perfect for this type of application.


It is used to pump the slurry that is produced, directly to the customers washing plant without the need for expensive excavators and dumper trucks.


The application shown here uses the Goodwin 200mm ANZE® Submersible Slurry Pump. By using the Goodwin pump, rather than a domestically sourced pump, the production has increased by over 275%, and this one mine site is now delivering over 11 Tonnes of Nickel per day, at US$11,000 per Tonne.
